The world’s first world’s first hydrogen-powered fuel-cell vehicle intended for mass production rolled off the production line at Honda Motors on yesterday. With oil prices hitting $140 a barrel the race to find a more cost effective and cleaner alternative is hotting up and the FCX Clarity is a step in the right direction.
But we are going to have to wait a while before we can get our hands on one of these babies. Each car cost several hundred thousand dollars each to produce, however this should drop below $100,000 in less than a decade as production volumes increase. In the meantime, the car company will be effectively subsidizing its customers, who will lease the vehicles for $600 a month. Honda has decided to launch the car in Southern California who has led the way in building hydrogen filling stations. Lets hope it doesn’t turn into a lot of hot air.
