Staggering as it might sound you save more water by not eating a pound of beef than you do by not showering for an entire year! The carnivores in us all might balk at this statistics but when you add to this that cattle are responsible for 18% of greenhouse gases, more than cars, planes and all forms of transport put together you have to admit that becoming a veggie might be an option that we may all have to consider given the climate change conundrum we all face.
You don’t have to go complete veggie – the guys at Do the Green Thing have put their unique creative talents to work again this month to suggest that we make eating meat less of a habit and more of a treat by chopping out a couple of portions a week.
But back to the water thing, we all know it is probably one of the most precious resources and vital for everyone’s everyday life. In spite of this obvious fact, people use large amounts of water: drinking, cooking and washing, but even more for producing things such as food, paper, cotton clothes, etc. Now we have all heard of an ecological footprint, but have you heard of a water footprint? Designer Timm Kekeritz has created a fantastic water footprint poster visualizing the water consumption of the total volume of freshwater that is used to produce the commodities, goods and services consumed by a person, company or nation. Check it out and quench your thirst at The Virtual Water Project.
