Forgive me but this one leaves me cold. Al very well the work that Croke Park are doing on energy management and use of renewable energy, waste etc. However, this whole pledging your personal reductions which somehow wil make Croke Park "Neutral" is a farce. There is no basis for "giving" a emissions reduction, on a personal level, to anything. What this warm and fuzzy plan leads to is what is called double-counting. As an example, one of the pledges is to install a woodchip boiler. Excellent, a great thing to do. Lets say that when switching from oil this reduces a houses emissions by 5 tons CO2/year. Having done this, you think that your personal emissions have now droppped, and in whatever carbon calculator you use, you'll note the change in the heat source and see your emissions drop. At the same time, you pledge this to Croke Park and they'll count that as a reduction leading them to "Carbon-neutral" status. Thats double-counting for you, accountants get jailed for this kind of stuff.
So right On Croke park, keep doing the good work on the real emissions-reductions,on sustainability, maybe concentrated on things like properly organising car-pooling for big matches, working for sufficient bus/rail-links for match-days, but this pledges stuff, thats just too much.
The reason for my bah-humbuggery is the importance in getting the figures right for emissions-reductions so that we can set real goals, define real actions and get real reductions.

The Cúl Green website was set up to make Ireland's largest sports stadium (Croke Park) a cleaner, greener stadium. An interesting case on how to make public buildings carbon neutral. Join the group and support www.culgreen.ie

Agreed, you cant trick climate change correction or emissions reductions into existence and as this issue unfolds transparency will be the driving factor. The Cúl Green initiative is great, but like all projects it is emergent and change will be an essential part of its evolution.
Good points smallcog and this is precisely what public discussion can offer an organization like the GAA. Feedback that shows them what people are saying and will say about their project. Invaluable research, more of this I say!!

Agree that the initiatives within Croke Park is step in right direction,
On the "fans" side, Croke Park are recognising that a big part of the stadium's carbon footprint is the travel to and from the stadium on match days. In order to counter this they are encouraging an awareness among supporters to make changes in their lives and also make changes to the way that they travel to Croke Park.
As a national organisation the GAA are also encouraging a change in behaviour among their followers and local clubs,
Across each of the above there will be a direct impact and incremental reduction in emmissions - surely that should be seen as a positive, not intended to leave you cold! -
Oh and the cost of the water to deal with the sewage might be reduced.

oops, that was for the fertiliser discussion
