I went to the tip the other day to dispose of loads of old paint pots. I had a mixture of emulsion and oil-based paints, the latter bring the concern. The guys at the tip told me to put ALL the paints in the main waste, despite the fact that I made it very clear that I had oil-based stuff in there. Surely this is wrong? Anyone got any advice on this?

The lovely chaps who work there really have no clue and are quite rude at times, in my experience.

Was that the tip next to Whitehawk?

Yeah, kinda near the race course.

(...for me, anyway)

Nah. This one was in Hove...next to Homebase, Dixons etc...

Yes, this is illegal. Paint's are classed as a hazardous substance and need special treatment. They should not go into general rubbish. The only way to dispose of paint in general rubbish is to solidifies it with a paint solidifier.
The best solution is to use only as much paint as needed by measured the square meterage of the aria to be painted. Though this isn't so easy when you only want to paint a door and can only find 1L tins.
Paint disposal is far lass an issues with eco and natural paints.
