Well, we already do some of this...
mostly old undies & vests etc. which are nice & soft, for cleaning etc. & the monthly cloth pads.. ('Always'-alternative!:))

When we had a doggie old tracksuits & such were used for making her box cushy..

I want to also have 'eco/reusable' rewashable paper-towel-alternative of cut up rags in a box on the counter, found it on the great myzerowaste website...

not just mine. When i broke up with my partner, he left a lot of his things in my place, so i cut them up, use them for cleaning, or brought them to the cat shelter to use jumpers for cats beds! Felt better not just donating, but cleansing my apartment of the old.
