Nowadays there are plenty of brands of rechargeable batteries and chargers that can charge in a short period of time. Why keep spending money on throwaways when you can reuse many many times? Just make sure to do your research before purchasing.

The chemicals in all batteries are such that they should be disposed of at proper recycling depots (eg the ones run by Dublin City Council), and not just put in the bin. There's some good info here about the various kinds of rechargeables:
