Recycle your computers
Don't throw your computer equipment away, recycle it. Sell it on eBay or if you're feeling very philanthropic give your equipment away to a school, charity or the third world - there is always Freecycle too. Most computer equipment thrown away or left outside will be put into landfill or end up in massive decaying piles in third world countries. Most of the trashed equipment could have been used else where.

This is a great idea. I'm an office manager and currently am in the process of upgrading 24 laptops with no idea what to do with the old ones. I'm hoping we can give them to Camera.ie. Thanks!

I don't know of too many places close to where I live that do this. If I want to do this I have to drive about 3 hours to my mother-in-laws, one weekend a month and then if I'm lucky and get there on time they'll take my recyclable electronics.

Hey, you can also get Camera to take it off your hands, they refurbish and send to Developing countries along with people to train local teachers in schools for use there. Ref http://www.camara.ie/

My first step is to see if any friends/family want my old computer or parts from it. If there are no takers, I freecycle it. My last option is to take it to a local electronics recycling event. Luckily, there is a company about 10 miles from where I live that accepts any electronic device one weekend a month. If you have a hard drive that you want to make sure will not have data taken from it, you can have them put it in a hydraulic press to crush it for a few bucks. You can even watch.
You can see if there are places near you by googling "electronics recycling" or "ecycling" and your town.
