This is a nice goal, I think everybody should think about it. People tend to feel bad if all their friends have the latest gadgets or car or whatever.
I don't have a car and my pc and phone are a few years old, but I feel just fine, I only replace things when they break down.
I think you should pleased with yourself in the first place and keep other people's opinions about you on the second place.

This to me is an incredibly important goal. Myself and many others I know are seeing how influenced we are around our consumption. For example I drink coffee alot now, and its not only my personal choice, its a cultural choice. I am influenced by the cafe culture of Dublin. I don't need coffee. I don't need most of the "stuff" I consume and am now taking it on board to watch the difference between mindless consumption and thoughtful consumption. Its these kind of human choices that will make the difference. We are what we eat, and this planet is now showing us that it reacts to how we consume. Checking the origin of food and the ingredients used is something I am spending more and more time doing, and again its just a habit. Writing about it here helps too.

Good question Kips I guess genuine for me would be knowing that my want was in some way benefiting someone, some good cause or something meaningful.

I don't think there is anything wrong with 'wanting' something...it's how you go about getting it, at the expense of others or the environment, or at your own expense...that really matters. I have daily 'wants' and just stop for a little while & ask, do I really want it, or is it just a fleeting idea and can I get it at no one's expense or detriment. It's surprising how often I stop at the first question, deciding it's not really necessary, I've learned I can be fickle and impetuous, not an attractive trait, but I'm trying to accept that I'm human & examine my motives before buying or consuming.
Now that sounds like a lecture...it's not, but thought I'd share my way of trying to be a citizen.
