A trip out to Silliot Hill for those anywhere near Kildare is a good idea.
Be sure to take as full a load as you can, as it is a bit far from anywhere (that's where (even understandable) NIMBYism gets you).
There are, however, costs on certain item types. The service is totally public sector, run by the County Council:

Hello!
For the Austinites out there, recycling electronic waste just got a little easier! The Student Engineering Council, at the University of Texas at Austin, is throwing an E-waste Drive on Saturday, March 28, 2009. Come donate any unwanted or old electronics to the drive and help prevent the accumulation of e-waste in landfills! Goodwill is generously offering its electronic recycling services by reselling any functional devices and recycling the rest. The collection point is going to be at the LBJ parking lot on campus from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more information on what items to bring or to volunteer, go to http://www.engr.utexas.edu/sec/service/index.html .
Hope some of you can make it!
