Where does the data used for my calculations come from?
Edenbee is part of a much larger community which is powered by the Avoiding Mass Extinction Engine (AMEE).
The AMEE platform is open source and backed by Defra (the UK Government's Environment Department), this means data is government approved and regularly updated.
When you provide us with readings or usages we use AMEE's data and formulas to convert these values into real quantities of carbon dioxide.
How is my carbon footprint calculated?
The calculation is quite involved but your carbon footprint is essentially an average of your usage over the last 12 months and then converted into tonnes of Co2 per year. Here is a more detailed formula for those who are really interested.
- Calculate your co2 for each of the past 12 months (c)
- Calculate how many months in the last 12 you have logged data for (c)
- Sum up all the (c) values to give us (t)
- Average monthly co2 value (a) = t/m
- Yealy Co2 value = a x 12
- This final value is rounded to 2d.p.
How can I improve the accuracy of my carbon footprint?
By adding as many readings as possible and being as honest as you can be your readings will be much more accurate.
Why do I have to put more than one reading in before my graph will show?
Edenbee's carbon calculator works using ranges, this means that we need at least two readings before we can begin to calculate your usage.
We use the first reading as a starting point and compare it to your future readings, this allows us to analyze at your usage over time.
What does my graph show, how do I interpret it?
Your graph shows your carbon usage broken down to monthly values in tonnes of Co2 over the last 12 months.
Why is my Edenbee footprint different to my carbon footprint on other sites?
Your Edenbee footprint is individual, it is calculated for just you rather than your whole household. It takes into account your personal and transport carbon usage, but currently we don't consider your commercial usage. Industrial and commercial usage can often make up to 50% of your footprint.
